I am lucky enough to be reading an advance copy of Solace House, the new novel from Will Maclean (co-writer of Broken Veil, one of my favorite podcasts). It’s about a group of British students who spend their summer break clearing out some old, abandoned properties. I’m about halfway through, and it is incredibly tense.
I listened to the audiobook of The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest, by Aubrey Hartman, which is the kid’s book I wish I’d had when I was younger. The titular Fox is Clare, who guides animals over to the afterlife. Kind of like a Charon for critters. The audiobook is lush and gorgeous, beautifully narrated by Marisa Calin. Get some whimsy in your life and give it a listen.
I have also been reading Nightjar, a short story collection by Emily Ruskovich. Such wonderful writing, mostly about human infallibility.
I’ve also been hopping back and forth between the audiobooks for Best American Short Stories 2025 and Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2025. I wept at Also, the Cat by Rachel Swirsky, and Country Birds by Kij Johnson.
I need to choose a new audiobook novel, which I’m struggling with. Any recommendations?
Also, the International Booker longlist looks great. I’ve only read two of the novels listed, but I think The Witch by Marie Ndiaye should win. Hoping to check the other ones out soon. I’ve not read any translated fiction so far this year, which sucks.
Have a great week! It’s 90 degrees in my corner of the world right now. In February. I’ve lived in California for over ten years now and I’ll still never be able to predict the weather.
