I stupidly let Old Soul sit on my Kindle for over a year before I actually got around to reading it. I’d heard murmurings that Susan Barker’s horror novel was amazing, but I had absolutely no idea how it would consume me for the better part of a week.
First off, if you haven’t read Old Soul already, please go do so now. I don’t want to give too much away, but I went into this book barely knowing anything about the plot, and I’m so glad I did because the book guides the reader to all sorts of unexpected places. I won’t cheapen it by calling it “twisty”; this is a deftly plotted work, the likes of which I’ve never read before.
Enough with the hyperbole (for now), let’s get down to the details. The central plot takes a little while to unfold, starting with stories of mysterious deaths, and a man called Jake who is traversing the globe looking for connections between the murders. Throughout the novel, we encounter many characters in different times and locations, and when everything comes together it is immensely rewarding.
No spoilers, but I was left breathless by the ending. It was unexpected, but at the same time made absolute sense.
If you like weird labyrinthine horror, you will adore Old Soul. Highly recommended.
