Here’s the list:

  • The Warlock Effect, by Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson (Hodder and Stoughton)
    • Imported from the UK via Blackwell’s Books. Not sure if it’s getting a US release. I’m a huge Dyson/Nyman megafan, and I was sadly disappointed by this one.
  • Poor Deer, by Claire Oshetsky (Ecco)
    • ARC, will be published in January 2024. From the author of the incredible Chouette. Full review here.
  • The Summer Book, by Tove Jansson (NYRB Classics)
    • I am a sucker for grandmother/granddaughter stories. This is a gorgeous book.
  • Jackal, Jackal, by Tobi Ogundiran (Undertow)
  • Hazardous Spirits, by Anbara Salam (Tin House Books)
    • ARC, will be published in October. Such a wonderful, gothic story of a man who thinks he can talk to the dead, and the problems this causes for his rational wife. Full review here.
  • January, by Sara Gallardo; translated by Frances Riddle and Maureen Shaughnessy (Archipeligo)
    • The first time this Argentinian classic has been translated to English. Brutal. Full review here.
  • The Fire Never Goes Out, by N.D. Stevenson (Harper Teen)
    • I watched Nimona and loved it. This one wasn’t “for me”, as I’m pushing 40.
  • Thornhedge, by T. Kingfisher (Tor Nightfire/Macmillan Audio)
    • ARC, to be published mid-August. This is a gorgeous book. T. Kingfisher is one of my favorite writers. Full review here.
  • Deep as the Sea, Red as the Sky, by Rita Chang-Eppig (Bloomsbury)
    • Awesome lady pirate action, based on a real historical badass! Full review here.
    • Bonus – Chang-Eppig did a great chat with The Writer’s Center, which is available here.
  • Silver Nitrate, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Rey)
  • Maddalena and The Dark, by Julia Fine (Flatiron Books)
    • I don’t quite understand why the world isn’t going completely batty over this book. I loved it. Full review here.
